Description
Magdalena Island is the bird watchers´ paradise. Together with Marta Island, they make up Los Pingüinos Natural Monument (The Penguins Natural Monument): a natural habitat for over 120,000 Magellanic Penguins and one of the largest penguin colonies in the south of Chile.
The tour to the island is a show in itself. During a two-hour sailing trip along the Straits of Magellan, visitors will enjoy the magnificent panoramic views of Punta Arenas, the plains of Tierra del Fuego and the oil fields of Cabo Negro or Bahía Laredo.
After this visual display, the island waits for visitors immersed in the strait, 35 km (22 mi.) away from the city of Punta Arenas. Once there, the landscape will host the main characters of the trip: penguins, cormorants, and sea lions, among many others. During an hour, visitors will walk through paths enjoying the sight of thousands of penguins and nests. They will walk from the coast to the highest point in the island, where they will see a lighthouse that houses the Centro de Interpretación Ambiental (Environmental Interpretation Center). This center is specialized in the history of the strait and its native fauna.
