It was inaugurated in 1942, receiving this name to honor President Alvear, a theater buff, as well as art in general. It was first managed by the famous businessman Pascual Carcavallo and, upon his death, by his heirs. Some time later, it was put in the hands of the city Culture Bureau.
Nowadays, it is part of the “Complejo Teatral de Buenos Aires”, together with the Teatro San Martin, Teatro Sarmiento, De La Ribera and Regio, controlled by the city authorities. It can sit up to 800 people, and it is among the most important theaters, with an active theater and music program.
