Address: Esmeralda 443 – San Nicolás
This theater is located in the emblematic corner of Corrientes Avenue and Esmeralda Street. It is among the classic theaters, holding celebrated glory and history. It was first into Variete and music hall; now, it offers a smart program featuring famous national figures. It is said that this place hosted art events during colonial times. Its history is also associated with tango, as the place where Gardel sang for the first time “Mi Noche Triste”, which considered “the first tango” (a whole story told in three minutes), setting the trend of the way this type of music would be sang from then on. It was also the premiere stage of Azucena Amizani’s “Esta Noche Me Emborracho”, by Enrique Santos Discépolo. For this and the premiere of many others during the ‘30s and ‘40s, it is the only theater that inspired a tango (“Maipo”). It was severely damaged by a big fire in 1928, but it recovered and reopened a year later. In 1943, another fire caused great damage to the stage; it was recovered and reopened in 1944 by César Amadori. Nowadays, it is in the hands of the prestigious businessman Lino Patalano, famous for his original and magnificent ideas, always going for the best, and showing true interest in theater and culture. He shares the artistic direction with Julio Bocca.
It always attracts people for its program, plays, music hall or music shows. It also has a high-level cuisine restaurant in the upper level, called “Maipo Club Cocina”, and a small room that offers alternative works.
It offers parking to customers.
