¿Un Parque Nacional en la Meseta de Somuncurá?

Si prospera un proyecto que ya lleva un tiempo en análisis, la Patagonia podría contar con un nuevo Parque Nacional que protegería una vasta región en el centro de la provincia de Río Negro, con características biogeográficas, sociológicas y paisajísticas únicas.

El proyecto de ley para la creación del Parque Nacional Meseta de Somuncura, en una extensa región de 14 mil kilómetros cuadrados de superficie en el centro-sur de la provincia de Río Negro, está dando sus primeros pasos y cuenta con un amplio respaldo de los habitantes de esa región de la Patagonia.

El Parque Nacional abarcaría zonas de Maquinchao, Los Menucos, Ramos Mejía y Valcheta, como un atractivo de proyección turística nacional e internacional, con la facilidad de acceso que posibilitan el pavimento de la ruta nacional 23 y los servicios del Tren Patagónico.

Esa región actualmente es un fuerte atractivo del turismo de aventura en Río Negro. La meseta de Somuncurá, nombre de origen mapuche que significa “piedra que suena”, está ubicada en el centro-sur de la provincia de Río Negro, en una zona de poca población, con características geográficas, botánicas y zoológicas excepcionales.

La Meseta de Somuncurá comenzó a formarse hace 40 millones de años con los procesos volcánicos que se extendieron hasta 5 millones de años atrás, y fue tallada desde ese remoto pasado por la erosión y por el mar que la cubrió. Un mar que llegaba y se iba; así, una y otra vez.

El mar dibujó golfos, cabos, puntas y bahías en esa tierra a la que arrasaba sin cesar. Dibujos que ahora emergen nítidos, pero secos, en la estepa patagónica y dentro de un área de biodiversidad excepcional.
Esta altiplanicie basáltica ocupa el centro-sur de Río Negro y el norte de Chubut, y en su geografía aparecen relieves de conos volcánicos, sierras, cerros y lagunas temporales y arcillosas. Las visitas del mar dejaron en ella fósiles de animales marinos y bosques de coníferas petrificados.

La llamaron somuncurá, en lengua tehuelche “piedras que suenan”, por el sonido que el viento arranca del basalto de las rocas. Los que caminan la meseta aseguran haber escuchado esos susurros.

Los biólogos encontraron allí ejemplares muy raros, como la mojarra desnuda, un pez sin escamas que según los científicos no sobreviviría fuera de este hábitat, y las pequeñas ranas, anfibio endémico de apenas 2,5 centímetros, negras o grises pero siempre de patas muy largas.

Otro raro habitante de la meseta son los lagartos, de brillantes colores amarillo, verde y naranja, que se mimetizan con el color de las rocas cuando trepan para estirarse al sol.
Geográficamente la meseta está formada por cañadones que los lugareños llaman “rincones”, por donde bajan los arroyos que la rodean, y por inmensas ollas vacías que fueron el lecho de antiguas lagunas.
En ella se reconocen tres ambientes. La mesada, que los pobladores llaman “la planicie”, un plano que emerge a los 1050 metros; las sierras volcánicas, un conjunto de cerros entre los que se destaca el Corona, de 1900 metros, y el área denominada consumición de la meseta, integrada por los bordes que sufren los procesos erosivos.

Hoy en día la Meseta de Somuncurá es un Área Natural Protegida. Los impulsores del proyecto de creación del Parque Nacional están tratando de que esta modificación en su estatus sea una empresa colectiva y participativa, ya que más allá de las cuestiones relacionadas con la protección del medio ambiente hay complejos aspectos relativos al régimen de tenencia de las tierras por parte de los ocupantes actuales y al manejo de los recursos turísticos.
