Address: Arenales 761 – Retiro
This majestic Palace known as the San Martín Palace is today the Ceremonial venue pertaining to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship.
Majestic in its form and style, this Palace is representative of the purest classic trends of the Belle Epoque. Dating from 1909, it was built as a residence for one of the most traditional families of the Buenos Aires elite: the Anchorena family.
Its construction was ordered to the architect Alexander Cristophersen, who is responsible for other emblematic buildings like the Church of Santa Rosa of Lima, the Círculo Italiano , and the Russian Orthodox Church among others.
This Palace is a set of three residences put together around a Patio of Honor, where a double staircase is found leading to each and everyone of this residences, with views facing the central and lateral gardens.
During the crisis that occurred in the ‘30s, the family could not maintain the building, thus handing it over to the government in 1936; it was then turned into the Ceremonial venue of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship, becoming the San Martín Palace.
The building belongs to the Architectonic Heritage of the city. It was restored in 1996 and can be visited through guided visits made on a daily basis.
