Liniers’ House

Address: Venezuela 469 – San Telmo

It dates back from 1788 and it is the only colonial house in the San Telmo neighborhood and it is one of the very few authentic houses in the city of Buenos Aires. This house belonged to Santiago de Liniers when Buenos Aires was already the capital of the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata. Currently Editorial Estrada (a publishing house) owns it which is in charge of its preservation, as the conservation rules of National Heritage order.

This simple house is a clear evidence of the times of the colony when poverty reigned. It is austere, flat, with unaligned windows and it was the home of the British Invasions heroes, who might have been the most important men at the time. It is the best sample of colonial buildings in Buenos Aires of the 1810s and one of the most luxurious houses at that time.

This house also has a great deal of architectonic importance because it is one of the very few records left from civil colonial architecture since only a part of it still stands with its original features. For all that has been stated before, Liniers’ house is a building of great value, being one of the very few authentic colonial records.
