La Estrella Pharmacy

Address: Defensa 201 – Monserrat

The “La Estrella ” pharmacy belongs to a part of national history. Bernardino Rivadavia, the creator of the first pharmacy of the city of Buenos Aires, appointed an important biochemist and botanist as manager of said pharmacy. As time went by, and while under another management, the pharmacy added the drugstore thus becoming the most important one in South America. In 1885, the “La Estrella” pharmacy inaugurated the building with a extraordinary decoration that stood out because of its art value and high quality details: Murano crystals, walnut tree-wood shelves, Carrara marble and the ceiling paintings by Barberis that were full of symbolisms that referred to “health”, “sickness” and “pharmacy books”. The façade has an original grating in the doors and three little angels that seem to be falling into nowhere.

“La Estrella” gained fame by selling prestigious original products that are still remembered with nostalgia: Roge lemonade, the “esperidina” tonic and the Parodi cough pills, among many others.
Apart from its commercial activity, the most important political characters attended many parties that were held in its halls: Carlos Pellegrini, Julio A. Roca, and Bartolomé Mitre, among others.

This pharmacy is the oldest shop in the entire city of Buenos Aires, fact that made it worthy of a number of awards and acknowledgements.
It still functions as a homeopathic and allopathic laboratory. It also offers important herbal medicines and perfumes.
