De cómo la ballena llegó al mar

Entre las leyendas que circulan entre los tehuelches, uno de los pueblos originarios de estas tierras sureñas, la ballena ocupa un lugar un tanto controversial.

En la mentalidad occidental y estandarizada por las telecomunicaciones, mayoritaria actualmente, predomina una visión- tal vez muy ligada al estereotipo del cetáceo de la película estadounidense Liberen a Willy– de la ballena como una especie en peligro que hay que salvar.

Sin embargo para la mitología tehuelche las ballenas no eran para nada animalitos indefensos y no siempre vivieron en el agua…

“A todo esto, en la Isla Legendaria, Nóshtex -padre de Elal- enterado por el Cóndor de la nueva residencia de su hijo, envió a su hermano Gosye a que devorara cazadores y criaturas, por creer que así se liberaría de Elal.

Para lograr su cometido, Gosye llegó a la Patagonia convertido en una gigantesca ballena llamada Góos. En vez de aletas tenía patas muy cortas, por lo que se le hacía difícil caminar con ligereza. Por esa razón prefirió quedarse en un cañadón, próximo al mar.

Todo bicho que pasaba cerca era comido por ella, ya que no sabía distinguir a Elal de las demás criaturas. A su panza iban a parar: zorros, guanacos, zorrinos, paisanos, pájaros; todo lo tragaba. Se perdían muchos Chónek; salían al campo a cazar y no volvían nunca más al toldo. Se los tragaba con montura y todo.

Así estaban las cosas cuando fueron a pedirle a Elal que los ayudara a encontrar a los paisanos que no regresaban.

-¿Qué es lo que pasa? -se preguntaban-. Estamos perdiendo a la gente.

Cada paisano que salía al campo no volvía más.

-Yo sé lo que pasa -dijo Elal-, mañana iré a ocuparme. Mientras tanto, no se acerquen al cañadón.

A la mañana siguiente, los paisanos salieron a cazar Choiques, pero se mantuvieron lejos del cañadón. Como se esperaba, ese día la Ballena Góos estaba ahí, deseosa de tragarse a todo bicho que pasase caminando o al vuelo.

Elal se había convertido en Tábano y andaba dando vueltas alrededor de ella; la molestaba terriblemente. Con agilidad le picaba los ojos, la boca. Góos se quejaba diciendo:

-¡Cómo me molesta esta Mosca! Cuando se aproxime me la voy a tragar.

Y así fue, se tragó a Elal convertido en Tábano. Pero Elal no se murió dentro de la Ballena. Para incomodarla más todavía, le picaba la panza, los pulmones y las tripas.

La Ballena, visiblemente molesta, se puso a caminar, porque al hacerlo se movía la gente que había tragado, los que todavía estaban vivos dentro de ella.

-Ahora voy a caminar, a ver si se muere ese Tábano -decía Góos.
Pero apenas dejó de hacerlo, el Tábano volvió a picarla, esta vez en el corazón.

Entonces, sintió que Elal hablaba dentro de ella con los paisanos que todavía estaban vivos.

-¡Qué lástima, yo entré sin cuchillo! ¿Nadie tiene uno? -escuchó que decía.

Un paisano le entregó el suyo.

Ya convertido en hombre, Elal tomó el cuchillo de piedra y con él abrió la panza de la Ballena. Salió primero y ayudó a los demás a escapar. Los pobres paisanos que salían estaban medio muertos; algunos se salvaron. Caían como borrachos cuando lograban huir de ahí dentro. Los que habían estado una noche nomás, esos se salvaron. Elal sacó fuera a los que estaban vivos, y a los muertos también.

Después de todo lo sucedido, Elal tomó a la Ballena Góos y la metió en el mar. ¡Que se fuera a vivir allá, donde todavía está!”
