Address: Junín 1970 – Recoleta
The piece of land where it is located was donated by Juan de Garay to some famous man of the moment. It had several owners until one of them handed some hectares over for the construction of the convent of Recoletos, which was inaugurated at the same time the Basilica Our Lady of Pilar was. On one of the sides, there was their orchard as well. When the monks were ejected due to the reformation of the Ecclesiastical Order, the place was turned into a public cemetery in 1822, where the orchard had been placed.
This is the cemetery of the Argentine Aristocracy. It keeps the remains of the most important political, historic and intellectual characters of the country.
The main tourist attraction is Eva Duarte de Peron’s grave, even if its mausoleum is not really visible, due to her macabre fate and the vicissitudes that her remains suffered until she could be put to rest in peace.
The cemetery has peculiar features, and deserves to be visited for the value of some of the art pieces it displays, the style of the architecture works it has, the allegoric figures that remember the people that rest there, the beautiful sculptures, original ornamentation and the angels that stand on top of the mausoleums.
