Address: Av de Mayo 575 – Monserrat
This used to shelter “La Prensa” newspaper, which had a very influential editorial in the country’s public opinion.
Founded in 1896, it is one of the most emblematic buildings in the city, with a French academicism style. The Salón Dorado (Golden Room), on the first floor, is a true imitation of one of the rooms in the Versailles Palace.
At the top of the building, which is 55m high, there is a majestic bronze statue of a woman, the symbol of freedom of press. She holds a very powerful torch in her right arm, which used to be lit up to spread the important news of the moment.
This building is now the seat of the City’s Culture Department. Apart from the administrative tasks of cultural affairs, this place hosts different artistic, cultural and musical activities.
In addition, it is the seat of the Cultural Heritage Administration, which has published several works at inexpensive prices, such as clear and complete info guides, maps of all types, specialized books on the neighborhoods, historic cafés of the city and several research works about the legends, architecture and customs.
