Address: Av. Alvear entre Schiaffino y Posadas – Recoleta
This square owes its name to the patron saint of the city of Buenos Aires. Here was located, at the beginning of the century, the Recreo de Belvedere, a place where tango was danced for the first time in public, when it was still unacceptable in the salons.
The trees in this plaza come mostly from those that the Recollect monks planted in the area. President Nicolás Avellaneda also contributed to its landscaping, adding palm trees, for example. There are also ombúes and various species of ficus.
One of the most surprising views of this square is obtained if one enters it through the steps of Av. Alvear and Schaffino, in that way the first thing you see is the monument to Emilio Miter, the work of the sculptor Hernán Cullen, built in One-piece Carrara marble on a gray granite pedestal.
