It was the city’s first avenue, constructed during Mayor Torcuato de Alvear’s administration. It was first transited in 1894, becoming the main institutional axis that joins the seats of the Legislative and the Executive Powers (respectively the Congress and the “Casa Rosada”), and following the Parisian urban model in the lay out of the avenues. Since then, it has been considered “the great European boulevard of Buenos Aires”. While traveling it, we can find buildings of high architectonic value, not only French, but also Central and Eastern European representations.
Many consider the characteristics of its spirit transport us as far as the “Gran Vía” in Madrid (this city’s main street). Certainly, it is strongly recommended to look up and admire the beautiful domes of the buildings erected along it, and other details that reveal the most sophisticated and modern trends of those times. The lower part of the buildings usually appears as a mixture that has nothing to do with the original style.
