Margarita Xirgu Theatre

Address: Chacabuco 875 – San Telmo

It is located in the core of San Telmo, this building was inaugurated in 1886 as the Catalan Center in Buenos Aires, by effort of the Catalan residents. Years later, it became “El Casal de Cataluña”, still standing as the Margarita Xirgu Theater, whose name honors one of the most important Catalan actresses of all times. It has a lot of history and prestige for the many renowned national and international figures that have performed here: actors, singers and singer-songwriters, such as Federico García Lorca who directed his own works, Les Luthiers, and Joan Manuel Serrat, who performed here when he first came to Buenos Aires to offer his music.
It is an imposing room, suitable for top performances.
The building is a true sample of the Catalan style; we can observe the neo gothic and modernist style in its details, reproduced in great detail. The fresco in the main room stands out together with the stained-glass windows in the bar, the ceiling in the foyer, the imposing main stairs and the neo gothic details in the façade.
Its marquee always announces high-level independent theater works, with dazzling production and well-known actors, eminent concerts, and quality ballet performances. It is usually one of the main venues for the Theater Festival.
