he Museo Histórico de Buenos Aires (Buenos Aires History Museum) Cornelio Saavedra is located in General Paz Park, on General Paz Avenue, the avenue which borders the city. This magnificent green space was the garden of the ranch which once belonged to Luis María de Saavedra, nephew of the President of the First Patriotic Government, after whom the neighborhood and museum were named. A residential area has flourished around the museum featuring family houses with large gardens on irregular design and leafy tree-lined streets.
Inaugurated in 1921, the museum was housed in several premises until it finally came to this old house in 1880, homestead of the ranch, its final destination in 1942. an example of Italian style architecture, it was refurbished with original materials to give an Hispanic-Creole farm aspect. The recovery of the lake, a few meters from the museum, and the carrousel, with carriages and period top hats are other attractions which make this museum worth visiting.
Its three pavilions exhibit many objects which are part of the history of Buenos Aires; furniture, silverware, iconography, documents, maps, letters, jewelry, ornamental combs, fans, suits, weapons, medals, coins and bills. All of them reflect an image of the country and of the city which for three centuries has been capital of the Viceroyalty.
