Description
Day 1:
Reception at Trelew (or Puerto Madryn) airport and transfer to hotel in Puerto Madryn. Accommodation.
Day 2:
Península Valdés: This is a full-day excursion that takes you to one of the places chosen by UNESCO as Natural World Heritage. Due to its unique characteristics, it shelters a variety of sea and terrestrial animals only occasionally seen cohabiting one place.
Departure is planned for about 8 am, a time that allows you to learn about the natural reserves and the most important tourism spots within the Valdés Peninsula Protected Area. Among them you will visit the Ameghino Isthmus Center of Interpretation, Birds Island, a colony of sea lions in Punta Pirámides (during Summer, December-March), the Puerto Pirámides tourist village, shore elephant seals rookeries in Punta Delgada, Caleta Valdés and Punta Cantor.
During the trip you will be able to see abundant terrestrial fauna, such as guanacos, maras (Patagonic hares), foxes, armadillos and choiques.
Our guides, expert interpreters of Patagonian fauna, will assist you through the whole excursion.
The total ride covers 400 Km. It can be taken all year round, the itinerary and reserves visited vary depending on the season and the fauna to be seen. It implies no difficulty. It is recommended to take comfortable clothing, hat, sunscreen and to be ready and eager to enjoy the day!
This voyage will take you one or two miles into the sea, to approach the whales. The navigation also lets you watch many cormorant colonies, who build their nests against the cliff and there they breed and raise their babies. You can also see other specimens of the coastal bird fauna.
Once the ship is far enough from the coast, the engine is stopped and for a moment there is plain silence interrupted only by the sounds of penguins, seagulls, gulls and cormorants. It's the moment of waiting… somebody watches a group of birds in the distance. The ship gets closer and suddenly, when the whole group is attentive, something silver and white jumps next to the ship, and the strong sound of a body splashing the sea is heard. It's all excitement then: everybody shouts, speaks in different languages and the cries of children blend… And to complete this feast some dolphins always show up to jump and play in complete freedom.
The navigation lasts about 60 minutes.
Day 3:
Punta Tombo.: This is a full-day excursion, departing from Puerto Madryn at about 8 am. Punta Tombo is the most important continental colony of Magellan Penguins. In order to get to it, you need to travel a typical Patagonian route, through the steppe. At the end, you will get to an extensive beach, the ocean, and more than about a million penguins.
The reserve is entered through a modern Interpretation Center where you can observe the behavior of the Magellanic Penguins, the importance of caring for the environment and the ecosystem.
In this area you will be able to walk freely along the paths, literally beside the penguins. You will have the time to observe them, and the guide will tell you about the habitat and the lifestyle of this amiable little animals.
On the return you can visit the Paleontological Museum Egidio Feruglio in Trelew. One of the most important in the world in its genre and international reference for its discoveries and research.
The distance traveled is about 400 km. This excursion may be taken from mid September through mid March, during the penguin season.
It presents no degree of difficulty. We suggest taking comfortable clothes, hat and sunscreen.
